Those passengers who don't feel quite up to a full meal for dinner can head to The Living Room, a bar and lounge area that doubles as the nightclub on each ship. There, sandwiches and pastries are offered in the afternoons, and tapas are available during dinner hours. Due to its price point, popularity in Europe and lack of short voyages, Azamara appeals to older, more affluent travelers with a surplus of vacation time. The average age can fluctuate from sailing to sailing, but it's common to find most passengers in their 60s and 70s.

The crew starts talking up the event days before, and passengers come prepared with their white outfits. Then the dining team stages an elaborate barbecue and buffet on the pool deck with myriad options (from lobster tail to a carved whole fish and grilled steak), served by the officers. People come for the food but stay for the party, and for hours passengers are dancing, chatting and enjoying the fresh air on deck as the sun sets and the ship sails. Nearly two-thirds of all itineraries listed on Azamara's schedule are to the Mediterranean, the Baltic and Northern Europe. Now, Azamara also is offering lengthy world cruises that include a near-complete circling of the globe, with one scheduled for 2024 and another set for 2025. Although Azamara is often compared with Oceania Cruises, Azamara differentiated itself from other upmarket cruises through longer stays in ports and more overnights. If you're used to big ships, Azamara's evening entertainment will seem limited by comparison.

In most cases, the voyages — all out of Cape Town — are 12 nights in length, though Azamara sometimes offers slightly longer voyages in the region. They typically focus almost exclusively on South African ports and allow for excursions to many of South Africa's most famous wildlife sanctuaries. The line's ships each have one main dining room, Discoveries Restaurant, that allows passengers to dine at any time during set hours for complimentary breakfast, lunch and dinner. The waiter-served menu there changes daily, and you should plan on spending at least 90 minutes for dinner, especially if you're having dessert. At this time, the line does not offer any cabins for solo cruisers, which means the already pricey fares for Azamara's sailings double if you're traveling alone.
The Azamara Quest and Azamara Journey both entered service in 2000 under the original names R Six and R Seven. In March 2018, Adonia was also taken over from P&O Cruises and renamed Azamara Pursuit. The cruise line’s President Carol Cabezas has signaled that Azamara may be adding more ships to the fleet in the near future. No details are available as of early 2023, but Cabezas has promised that the line will experience growth in a range of ways.
The ships, which hold only 690 passengers each, offer a superb blend of amenities, yet they are small enough to feel friendly and cozy. The culmination of Azamara's destination focus is the complimentary AzAmazing Evening that's held at least once per voyage. Another special evening that's held every cruise regardless of destination, the White Night Party, is also unabashedly popular, judging by passenger participation. The bulk of the tables in both Discoveries Restaurant and the buffet are designed for two people but pushed close enough together that mealtime conversations across tables are a common occurrence.
The line's demographic is largely well traveled and port savvy, with many passengers forgoing shore excursions in favor of independent exploration. Most itineraries range from a week to two weeks in length, but the line has also offered itineraries lasting more than 100 days, calling on more than 60 ports in more than two dozen countries. One of the line's most notable hallmarks is its focus on longer, later stays in port. Coupled with its AzAmazing Evenings program, which takes cruisers ashore to experience cultural performances in jaw-dropping locations, the experience is a little less superficial-feeling than other cruise excursions. The line comprises four older ships (carrying roughly 700 passengers each). In the evening, passengers gather for shows, one of which is an at-sea version of New York supper club and cabaret, Feinstein's 54 Below with Broadway talent, along with local dancers and musicians from the destinations. Enrichment lectures with the World Wildlife Fund Guest Speaker Series are well attended, and foodies hit the culinary demonstrations and wine tastings. There are ship parties, like ABBA Night, dancing in the Living Room and occasionally karaoke, but destination immersion rules. Azamara's fleet serves up a delightful ambiance that's a hybrid of luxury and destination-immersive cruising.
Another hallmark of the Azamara Journey experience is its destination focus. One of four ships in the Azamara fleet, Journey stops in a mix of standard and off-the-beaten path ports, offering longer stays and at least one overnight on each sailing. Azamara ships sail everything from short, four-night cruises along the French Riviera to 155-night globe-circling voyages.
